  • Journal writing: Journaling writing continues! You will receive your child’s first kindergarten journals at conferences.
  • Listening center: Students will continue to listen to Thanksgiving books at the listening center.
  • Poetry journal: Students will learn a new poem in the pocket chart and will illustrate this poem in their poetry journals: The Turkey is a funny bird, its head goes wobble wobble. All it knows is just one word, gobble, gobble, GOBBLE!
  • High frequency words:  I have introduced: the, I, we, go, yes, no, will, to, see, like, is, a, my,do, have, and, you and COLOR WORDS: RED, ORANGE, YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE, PURPLE, BROWN, BLACK, WHITE and PINK are the words we will focus on. Please look for the November/December word wall in your child’s folder on Monday.
  • Decodable books: We will read a new decodable book during reading group next week and we will also continue our fluency packets. The purpose of the fluency packets is to build fluency which means helping students read accurately, with the correct speed, and with appropriate expression. As I’ve mentioned, the books and passages students read in kindergarten will include a lot of controlled or decodable text. Currently, that means text with high frequency words we’ve learned along with consonant/vowel/consonant (CVC) words.  This allows me to see that students are using their phonics skills to decode words vs. guessing, using pictures, etc. Thank you again for getting those reading folders returned each week!
  • Birthdays:  Be sure to check in with your child on his/her birthday!  Students should be able to give me the month and the date.
  • Read alouds: We will continue to read both fiction and nonfiction stories about Thanksgiving. Students continue to name the characters, setting, problem and solution in fiction stories. Do this at home as well!
  • interactive writing: our “shared writing” time when the kids watched and helped me write on chart paper has now transitioned to “interactive writing” time! The kids now write along with me on their whiteboards. The “writing leader” generates a sentence and we focus on starting the sentence with one capital letter, using lowercase letters, finger spaces in between words, correct spelling of word wall words and streeeetching (writing the sounds we hear) in all other words. This is another way students practice their letter/sound relationships!

Math:

We completed modules 7-9 this past week. Your child should have come home with this workbook, unless there were some pages that needed to be made up. We will begin 4-6 next week! Those modules are all about addition and subtraction. We will work in this book until Christmas break!

  • Teen numbers: recognizing teen numbers as a group of ten with ___ ones.
  • Counting to 80. We will now practice counting to 80. At home, please practice counting to 80 (or beyond)!  The goal by the end of kindergarten is to count to 100 (or beyond)!
  • Greater than/less than: we will continue to practice comparing numbers within 20.
  • One more/one less: students will practice naming “1 more” and “1 less” for numbers within 20.
  • Counting order: students will practice putting a group of numbers in “counting order,” with a set of numbers not including “1”.
  • Counting by 10s: We will continue to practice skip counting by 10s to 100.  The kids are already picking up on it quickly! At home, in the car–please practice counting by 10s!
  • Counting by 5s: I will introduce skip counting by 5s.

Religion

  • We will continue to attend 8am Mass each Tuesday.  Remember, doors open 5 minutes early, at 7:45.
  • We will continue to add a “thankful feather” to our classroom turkeys. Thank you God for all our blessings!
  • We completed both our “Room 108 is thankful list” and our guided writing page for our latest class book. You’ll be able to see both on display in the hallway at conferences!
  • Kindness project: our dual language immersion kindergarten class launched a special kindness initiative called “The Domino Effect.”The idea is  one small act of kindness can create a chain reaction that helps families in need.

  • How You Can Help

They are inviting all classes to participate by collecting boxes of cereal (any kind).

    • Each student is encouraged to bring one or more boxes to their classroom.
    • Collection deadline: Friday, November 17
