February Update – DLI

We had a joyful and meaningful month in February as we explored our unit, “Happy and Healthy.” Throughout this unit, students learned about the many ways we can take care of our bodies and minds to stay healthy every day.

Our learning focused on several important topics, including:

  • A Healthy Life
  • Germs Should Not Be Shared
  • Get Up and Exercise! / Stretch
  • Jack and the Hungry Giant Eat a Balanced Meal / Edible Colors
  • Resting / Bedtime

Through these lessons, students discovered how healthy habits, like eating balanced meals, exercising, keeping germs to ourselves, and getting enough rest, help our bodies grow strong and stay well.

Students continued to build on their prior knowledge and develop their language skills by learning new vocabulary related to health and wellness. They practiced speaking in complete sentences, actively listening during discussions and videos, and sharing ideas through collaborative conversations.

In literacy, we focused on asking and answering questions, identifying the topic, main idea, and key details, and using text features to better understand what we read. Students also practiced concepts of print, including directionality (understanding that we read from left to right and top to bottom).

Our essential skills this month included:

  • Developing knowledge and language
  • Oral language: vocabulary related to the theme
  • Active viewing and listening
  • Collaborative conversations
  • Reading and vocabulary development
  • Asking and answering questions
  • Identifying topic, main idea, and key details
  • Using academic vocabulary
  • Using text features
  • Concepts of print: directionality

Our foundational skills included:

  • Identifying beginning and ending syllables
  • Identifying syllables in spoken words
  • Recognizing alliteration
  • Practicing phonics with syllables that include the /b/ sound
  • Learning and reading high-frequency words (“words I want to know”)
  • Reading simple decodable texts

We are so proud of how students connected all of these ideas and understood that making healthy choices helps us feel our best both inside and out!

Thank you for your continued support in reinforcing these healthy habits at home.

Warmly,
Your Kindergarten Team
