March Update – DLI

We had an exciting and empowering month in March as we explored our unit, “We Can Do It!” Throughout this module, students learned about independence, perseverance, and the importance of trying new things with confidence.

Our learning focused on several engaging concepts, including:

  • I Can Do It By Myself
  • Let’s Make Music!
  • Everyone Can Learn to Ride a Bicycle

Through these topics, students discovered that with practice, patience, and a positive attitude, they are capable of accomplishing many things on their own. We emphasized building confidence and encouraging one another as learners.

Students continued to strengthen their language skills by learning and using vocabulary related to the theme. They practiced active listening and viewing, engaged in collaborative conversations, and expressed their ideas using complete sentences.

In literacy, we focused on making and confirming predictions, identifying story elements, and using picture and text clues to support understanding. Students also explored characters’ feelings and discussed how emotions play a role in stories. Additionally, we practiced concepts of print, including return sweep, which helps students understand how to move from one line of text to the next when reading.

Our essential skills this month included:

  • Developing knowledge and language
  • Oral language: vocabulary related to the theme
  • Active viewing and listening
  • Collaborative conversations
  • Reading and vocabulary development
  • Making and confirming predictions
  • Identifying story elements
  • Using picture and text clues
  • Understanding characters’ feelings
  • Concepts of print: return sweep

Our foundational skills included:

  • Manipulating syllables
  • Identifying syllables in spoken words
  • Producing rhymes
  • Practicing phonics with syllables that include the /v/ and /b/ sounds
  • Learning and reading high-frequency words (“words I want to know”)

  • We are so proud of the growth we saw this month as students-built confidence in their abilities and embraced the mindset of “I can do it!”
