Next Week:

th-thumb-/th/

ck-sock-/ck/

In addition to practicing words with digraphs (reading and writing), we will continue work on:

  • Sentence dictation: writing sentences and remembering TO– 1.) Start with a capital letter, 2.) finger spaces in between words, 3.) correct spelling of word wall/high frequency words, 4.) independent sounding out of all other words.
  • Understanding fiction vs nonfiction text.
  • High frequency/word wall word: I will introduce HAS and AS next week.
  • Narrative story form: character, setting, events/beginning, middle and end.
  • Read alouds: We will be reading books that focus on moms and the love moms share with each of us.  We are getting SO excited for our moms to spend some special time with us in the classroom!
  • Pocket chart: We will continue to recite our new pocket chart poem called, “Fuzzy, fuzzy caterpillar”
  • Reading group:  Please continue to practice on the weekends and send back on Tuesday!
  • Daily journaling continues!

We  started our FINAL kindergarten math workbook, modules 17-20. Hard to believe! These modules focus on:

  • Representing numbers to 20  with a written numeral
  • Measurement: length and height (compare and describe)
  • Weight: describing attributes of weight and comparing and describing weights.

In addition to the above math skills, we will continue to practice:

  • Counting to 100.  At home, please practice counting to 100 (or beyond)!
  • Addition and subtraction: we are working on writing and solving addition equations within  within 10. Students need to be able to identify +, -, = (plus sign, minus sign and equal to) and label  equations as either “addition” or “subtraction.”
  • Counting by 10s: We will continue to practice skip counting by 10s to 100. Practice at home!
  • Counting by 5s: We will continue to practice skip counting by 5s.  Practice at home!
  • Counting  by 2s: We will continue to practice counting 2s to 20. Practice at home!
  • Telling time to the hour: recognizing time to the hour on an analog and digital clock.

Religion/science:

  • Caterpillars: We will complete our second caterpillar observation.  We are writing and drawing what we notice!  We learned that the caterpillar’s only job is to EAT and boy, oh boy, they are doing just that!  They are so BIG!
  • We have bean and popcorn seeds growing in our classroom.  We are documenting the changes in our bean/popcorn seed journals.  So far, we see a root, some root hairs and a tiny green shoot on some!
  • May is almost here!  Each day during the month of MAY we will honor Mother Mary by adding the Hail Mary to our morning prayer.  We will also have a May altar for Mary.  I’ll be sharing with the kids next week—-if they have any flowers they’d like to bring in and add to the vase to honor Mary, they’re welcome to do so.  This is a great time to bring in some lilacs if you have them!  🙂
