Tales From the Third Grade Classroom September 23rd to 27th

Hello Everyone,

Fun things to remember for the week:

Monday September 23rd:  Poem Presentations Today!!  

Wednesday September 25th:  D4D at Antonino’s in La Grange.  I’ll be sending a flyer home.  Flag football at 4:30

Friday September 27th:  No School Teacher In- service

Here’s what we will be doing in class this week:

Religion:  We start every week with 2nd Steps this programs encourage our emotional and empathy growth to the people and situations about us,  This week we will spend time talking about how emotions and behavior can change quickly.  We will talk about ways we can handle our personal emotions when working with others.  We will also talk about how we can react supportively to those around us as well.  We will also talk about how Jesus taught us about God’s love for us and how we are all welcome in the Kingdom of God.

Math:  SW look at different game board designs and figure out the area of each. SW will begin creating their names using unit squares to figure out the area of each letter in their initials.  will work through solving problems with area to build understanding.  The class will work out story problems using the STEP BY STEP strategy.  The students will work to find the area of combined rectangles to build on their understanding of concept of area. 

Science:  We will continue the chapter about designing  a solution to a problem.  

Reading;   This week we begin the novel “The Case of the Gasping Garbage.”   This novel is about a group of friends who are interested in solving mysteries and conducting science experiments.  As we read this novel, the class will spend time talking about how characters actions, and events effect the out comes of the different stories we read.   

Phonics This week the class will ID the short e sound from auditory and visual clues.  The students will then discriminate among the sounds of short a, e, i, o and u in words.  We will then begin working with the long A and I sounds.  The students will recognize that the long A and I sounds can be  made by different spellings.  

Spelling:  Our words this week contain the abstract vowel sounds /oo/ and /ew/.  Due to the teacher inservice this Friday, we will take our Spelling Test on Thursday.

My name is Lisa Gearen. I started teaching at St. Cletus in 2003. I taught first grade for 14 years and now teach 3rd. I have a bachelors degree in Communication and a Masters in Elementary Education. I received both degrees from Concordia University.
