Next Week:

Language Arts:

We are now into UNIT 2 of fundations which is all about CAPITAL LETTERS.  This unit moves much more quickly (about 5 weeks long) as I’ll typically cover 4-6 capital letters each week.  So far, I’ve introduced: A, B, C, D.

  • Phonemic awareness skills: blending, segmenting and manipulation of sounds
  • Blending and reading 3 sound short vowel words, CVC words (cat, run, big) etc.
  • Story prediction
  • Alphabetical order
  • Uppercase letter formation: A-Z
  • High frequency/Word wall words: Click HERE for what our word wall will look like by the end of February.

Next week, we will begin our Gingerbread Man unit.  We will be reading several versions of the gingerbread story including Gingerbread Man, Gingerbread Girl, Gingerbread Baby, Gingerbread Friends and more! We will be comparing the different story elements, taking a close look at the characters, setting, problem and solution in each story.  We will also sort and graph our favorite stories at the end! We will wrap up the unit with gingerbread centers on Friday.

Math:

We are working on modules 4-6 which is all about sorting by shape, color, size and count, and also addition and subtraction up to 5.

  • Teen numbers: recognizing teen numbers as a group of ten with ___ ones.
  • Counting to 80. We will now practice counting to 80. At home, please practice counting to 80 (or beyond)!  The goal by the end of kindergarten is to count to 100 (or beyond)!
  • Greater than/less than: we will continue to practice comparing numbers within 20.
  • One more/one less: students will practice naming “1 more” and “1 less” for numbers within 20.
  • Counting order: students will practice putting a group of numbers in “counting order,” with a set of numbers not including “1”.
  • Counting by 10s: We will continue to practice skip counting by 10s to 100.  The kids are already picking up on it quickly! Practice at home!
  • Counting by 5s: We will continue to practice skip counting by 5s.  Practice at home!

Religion:

  • Next week, we will attend 8am Mass on Monday (holy day of obligation–solemnity of Mary–celebrates Mary’s conception without original sin), Tuesday (regular 8am Mass) and Friday (Our Lady of Guadalupe).
  • We will continue to gather around the crib and share kind deeds.  Please remind your child to do a kind deed each night!  This is what Advent is all about–getting ready for Jesus!
  • We will be busy practicing our songs and poems which will be presented to you at the end of the Mass on December 19th!  We will start to practice in church next week!
  • We have an advent chain in our classroom.  Each day we take a link off the chain and read the words on the link.  Those words tell us the story of Jesus’ birth!
