Next Week: Next week, will be all about valentine’s day and the winter olympics. If you can check out some of the winter olympics this weekend, that would be great!  Our olympics unit will end on February 20th with the kindergarten winter olympics which will take place in the gym.  We’re all set with volunteers, thank you!

Language Arts:

Fundations: ALL capital letters have now been introduced!  We are moving on to Unit 3 in fundations which is all about:

  • Phonemic awareness skills: blending, segmenting and manipulation of sounds
  • Blending and reading (decoding) and writing (encoding) 3 sound short vowel words, CVC words (cat, run, big) etc.
  • Story predictions
  • Retelling stories
  • Alphabetical order
  • Distinguishing between short and long vowels sounds.
  • High frequency/Word wall words: Click HERE for what our word wall will look like by the end of February. Next week I will introduce: play and went
  • Our read alouds next week will be stories all about VALENTINE’S DAY
  • Pocket chart: We will learn a new song in our pocket chart about showing God’s love to everyone. We will illustrate this song in our poetry journals.
  • Reading group: keep practicing the book folders I send home and remember to send them back! 🙂
  • Daily journaling continues!  At this point, students are expected to write 1-2 sentences.  They are correctly writing any word wall/high frequency words and streeeeetching all other words.  Students also have to generate their own topics, begin each sentence with a capital letter and end with punctuation.  PHEW!  That’s A LOT!  They’re rockin’ it though, and kindergartners LOVE an opportunity to share something about themselves which is what journaling is all about!

Math:

We will continue modules 11-14 which is about adding and subtracting within 10.

  • Counting to 100. We are now counting by 1s to 100! At home, please practice counting to 100 (or beyond)!  The goal by the end of kindergarten is to count to 100 (or beyond)!
  • Addition and subtraction: we are working on writing and solving addition equations within  within 10. Students need to be able to identify +, -, = (plus sign, minus sign and equal to) and label  equations as either “addition” or “subtraction.”
  • Counting by 10s: We will continue to practice skip counting by 10s to 100. Practice at home!
  • Counting by 5s: We will continue to practice skip counting by 5s.  Practice at home!
  • Counting  by 2s: We will continue to practice counting 2s to 20. Practice at home!

Religion:

  • I’ve got senses, I’ve got senses, yes I do!  Yes, I do!  Seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching, thank you, God.  Thank you, God. Next week, we will continue to explore our senses and will focus on our last sense, TASTE. This past week, students had to TOUCH different items to figure out what was in a bag.  Next week, we will do similar activity where I will let them TASTE different things and they’ll have to guess what it is they’re TASTING.  We learn about our world through our senses.  Our senses also help to keep us safe. Thank you, God!
  • Our new kindness project, “God’s love keeps us warm,” continues!  This kindness project reminds students that on these chilly, winter days, we stay warm and fuzzy on the inside because of all the love we get from our family and friends. Each time students are caught doing something extra sweet and kind, they will put a heart sticker on a mitten with their name on it.
  • We feel God’s love through our family and friends!  Valentine’s week will be all about the LOVE we feel from our family and friends!
