Kindergarten Newsletter, March 20

Upcoming Events/Mark your calendars:

*for our Lenten almsgiving project, students decided on anything in a CAN–canned soup, fruit, veggies, etc. Bring in any day! And remember, as I reminded the kids–sometimes that food is needed at YOUR house, and that’s just fine!  🙂

  • Tuesday, March 24-Thursday, March 26th: The St. Cletus Book Fair opens ! We  will “browse” the book fair on Monday afternoon, and then we will help the kids do any purchasing on Tuesday. You have a few choices when it comes to purchasing at the book fair: 1.) you don’t need to purchase anything 2.) you can create an “e wallet” by clicking on the link above 3.) you can stop by the book fair after school with your child to make purchases 4.) you can send your child with cash.  If you decide to allow your child make purchases, please just shoot me a quick email and let me know they have cash or an ewallet (especially with the ewallet).  Also, there is a table of small toys at the bookfair, so make sure your child knows what he/she can purchase, otherwise, kids tend to go right to the toys and trinkets table. 🙂

Book Fair hours: Tues, Wed and Thursday: 9-11:30am and 12:30-4pm: after school is a great time to pop in and make purchases with your child!

This Week:

  • We enjoyed celebrating St. Patrick and St. Joseph this week!
  • The week started with winter and ended with spring, yippee! The kids loved having the extra play time outside!

Next Week:

Language Arts:

Fundations: We will continue unit 4 in Fundations which is all about DIGRAPHS! In fundations, the digraphs are taught just like A-Z letter/sounds, with the letter-keyword-sound format:

wh-whistle-/w/

ch-chin-/ch/

sh-ship-/sh/

th-thumb-/th/

ck-sock-/ck/

In addition to being introduced to digraphs, we will continue work on:

  • Phoneme segmentation
  • Decoding three sound words with DIGRAPHS (chip, shack, when, etc.).
  • Narrative story form: character, setting, events/beginning, middle and end.
  • Read alouds: our read alouds will be all about spring and Easter; these will include fiction stories and nonfiction stories about Jesus’ journey to the cross as we start to get ready for Holy Week.
  • High frequency/Word wall words: Next week I will introduce SHE, HE
  • Pocket chart: We will learn another song about Spring! Ask your child to sing it to you!  It starts with: Spring is here, spring is here, goodbye snow.  Flowers grow…..
  • Reading group: keep practicing the book folders I send home and remember to send them back!
  • Daily journaling continues!  Their writing confidence is GROWING each day !  We have lots of opportunities to practice writing such as during interactive writing time (the kids are writing on their whiteboards while I’m modeling), shared writing (the kids help me fill in missing letters and words), guided writing (when the kids write on their paper along with me) and morning work time. This gives the students plenty of practice so that when journaling time comes around, they’re ready to be confident in their abilities to INDEPENDENTLY write their sentences.  They’re doing GREAT!

Math:

We are officially into modules 14-16 which is all about:

  • Analyzing and comparing 3D shapes-sphere, cylinder, cube cone
  • Describing the positions of objects–above, below, next to, in front of, behind, left, right
  • Analyzing and comparing 2D shapes-circle, square, triangle, rectangle, hexagon and rhombus

In addition to to these skills, we will continue to practice:

  • Counting to 100. We are now counting by 1s to 100! At home, please practice counting to 100 (or beyond)!  The goal by the end of kindergarten is to count to 100 (or beyond)!
  • Addition and subtraction: we are working on writing and solving addition equations within  within 10. Students need to be able to identify +, -, = (plus sign, minus sign and equal to) and label  equations as either “addition” or “subtraction.”
  • Counting by 10s: We will continue to practice skip counting by 10s to 100. Practice at home!
  • Counting by 5s: We will continue to practice skip counting by 5s.  Practice at home!
  • Counting  by 2s: We will continue to practice counting 2s to 20. Practice at home!

  • Next week, we will collect CANNED GOODS food pantry (almsgiving).
  • We will continue to share God’s love with others and have “given up” using unkind words (fasting/sacrifice)
  • We will continue to add a piece of tissue paper to our Lenten crosses each time someone is seen working hard to become more beautiful on the INSIDE, which is what Lent is all about!
  • God gives us NEW LIFE in the spring.  We are seeing signs of new life all around us! Next week, we will do some planting in our classroom.
