This Week:

Thank you for helping your child with the Halloween candy tally page. The kids enjoyed standing in front of the class and sharing the results!  We wrapped up Halloween talk this week and transitioned to November topics–turkeys, blessings and more!  We finished a few different turkey art projects this week including the classic handprint turkey! 🙂 Those projects will come home soon!

Sign-up for parent teacher conferences went out this week!  Be sure to sign up.  I can’t wait to meet with you all.  I have so many wonderful things to share!

Next Week:

Language Arts:

  • Fundations:  So far, I’ve introduced:

t, top, /t/

b, bat, /b/

f, fun, /f/

n, nut, /n/

  m, man, /m/,

i, itch, /i/

u, up, /u/

c, cat, /c/

o, octopus, /o/

a, apple /a/

g, game, /g/

d, dog, /d/

s, snake, /s/

e, Ed, /e/

r, rat, /r/

p, pan, /p/

j, jug, /j/

l, lamp, /l/

h, hat, /h/

k, kite, /k/

v, van, /v/

w, wind, /w/

Next week, I’ll introduce: y, yellow/y/ and x, fox, /x/.  For /x/, we use the ending sound in fox.  We no longer say “x is for xylophone,” which we did for so many years.  Instead, we want kids to hear the most common sound, /ks/ for  X, so that’s why the keyword is FOX.

  • Journal writing: Journaling writing continues!  Students are now writing about a topic they choose.  They’re working on streeeetching their words independently and using the word wall. If students ask, “how do you spell ___?” The answer is always, “Write the sounds you hear!”  Be sure to do this at home too! Correct spelling will come as students gain more phonics skills.  Right now, we want students to focus on practicing the letter/sound relationships they do know and work on independently stretching words.
  • Listening center: Students will continue to listen to Thanksgiving books at the listening center!
  • Poetry journal: We will learn a new song in our pocket chart: “The earth below, the sky above, the food we eat, the friends we love are all gifts from God, all gifts from God.” Students will illustrate this song in their poetry journals.
  • High frequency words:  I have introduced: the, I, we, go, yes, no, will, to, see, like, is, a, my,do, have, and, you. Next week, I will introduce our first november words, COLORS WORDS! RED, ORANGE, YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE, PURPLE, BROWN, BLACK, WHITE and PINK are the words we will focus on. Learning color words will REALLY get us singing and dancing in kindergarten!
  • Decodable books: We will read a new decodable book during reading group next week and we will also continue our fluency packets. The purpose of the fluency packets is to build fluency which means helping students read accurately, with the correct speed, and with appropriate expression. As I’ve mentioned, the books and passages students read in kindergarten will include a lot of controlled or decodable text. Currently, that means text with high frequency words we’ve learned along with consonant/vowel/consonant (CVC) words.  This allows me to see that students are using their phonics skills to decode words vs. guessing, using pictures, etc. Thank you again for getting those reading folders returned each week!
  • Birthdays:  Be sure to check in with your child on his/her birthday!  Students should be able to give me the month and the date.
  • Read alouds: We will be reading both fiction and nonfiction stories about Thanksgiving. We define non fiction books as books that teach us about something and fiction stories as stories from the imagination, stories with characters, a problem and solution.  Take a visit to the library and check out the nonfiction section with your child!

Math:

We will be finishing up modules 7-9 (we will go back to modules 4-6 right after) which is all about representing numbers 6-10.

  • Teen numbers: recognizing teen numbers as a group of ten with ___ ones.
  • Counting to 80. We will now practice counting to 80. At home, please practice counting to 80 (or beyond)!  The goal by the end of kindergarten is to count to 100 (or beyond)!
  • Greater than/less than: we will continue to practice comparing numbers within 20.
  • One more/one less: students will practice naming “1 more” and “1 less” for numbers within 20.
  • Counting order: students will practice putting a group of numbers in “counting order,” with a set of numbers not including “1”.
  • Counting by 10s: We will continue to practice skip counting by 10s to 100.  The kids are already picking up on it quickly! At home, in the car–please practice counting by 10s!
  • Counting by 5s: I will introduce skip counting by 5s.

Religion

  • We will continue to attend 8am Mass each Tuesday.  Remember, doors open 5 minutes early, at 7:45.
  • Every few days, we will add a “thankful feather” to our classroom turkeys. Thank you God for all our blessings!
