  • Decodable books: We will read a new decodable book during reading group next week.  Students are working on left to right tracking, quickly reading word wall words and tapping out CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words.
  • Read alouds: We are currently working on identifying story elements, retelling stories (beginning, middle and end) and comparing and contrasting stories. Story elements are the characters, setting, problem and solution. When reading fiction stories, the students help me fill out a chart with those 4 different story elements.  Characters are defined as people, animals or things in story.  The setting is where and when the story takes place. The problem is what is wrong in the story. The solution is how the characters solve the problem.  At home, when reading with your child, please ask about the characters, setting, problem and solution in stories. Next week, we will be reading 3 different stories–The Little Red Hen, The Little Red Hen Makes Pizza and the Little Green which.  We will focus on story elements, retelling or sequencing the stories and will compare and contrast these 3 very similar stories.

Math:

We are halfway done with modules 7-9 (we will go back to modules 4-6 right after) which is all about representing numbers 6-10.

  • Teen numbers:  We are practicing reading and writing our tricky teen numbers. Students will tackle another Halloween “count the room” clipboard activity next week.
  • Counting to 50. We will now practice counting to 60. At home, please practice counting to 60 (or beyond)!  The goal by the end of kindergarten is to count to 100 (or beyond)!
  • Greater than/less than: we will continue to practice comparing numbers within 20.
  • One more/one less: students will practice naming “1 more” and “1 less” for numbers within 10.
  • Graphing: We will continue graphing next week including “Are bats creepy or cool?” and also a candy corn graph.  Besides graphing the results, students will analyze the graphs and answer questions like, “how many ___?” “How many more ___ compared to ___” “how many ___ and ___ altogether?” etc.
  • Counting order: students will practice putting a group of numbers in “counting order,” with a set of numbers not including “1”.

Religion

  • We will continue to attend 8am Mass each Tuesday.  Remember, doors open 5 minutes early, at 7:45.
  • The next several weeks during religion time are all about how God is with us no matter what we’re feeling–happy, scared, sad, angry.  This past week, we focused on “happy” and “sad.”  We read one of our “Peter stories” from the religion series and discussed how God cares how we feel and asks us to care how others feel too! Next week, just in time for Halloween, we will focus on the feeling of being “scared”.
