November 18th 2024 Math Class Format

Classroom format:

We began Chapter 5 with the “prerequisite section” page 280. Students were directed to answer the questions in notebook. I went over answers to questions. It was a review. It went through an extensive review of two very important concepts y = mx + b (where m is the slope and b is the y intercept) AND how to calculate the slope when given two points. Class followed the following format:

1) I do (teacher): I did examples ex 1, 2, 3, 4 on pages 283-4 and ex 1. 2. 3 on page 292-93.

2) We do (class): The class worked on the 3 guided practice questions. Problem one and two on page 283. Problem one, two, three on pages 292-293. Students were given time to work through problems, ask questions, conference with a peer–then I went over each problem in detail. We also “wrote” on the board the process to solve a problem with slope and one coordinate point. We then modified the process for when there are two points given and none of them are a y-intercept.

3) You do (student independently):: Then I had the students do problems on loose leaf – problems 5, 10 and 24 – those three problems were the exit ticket. I will review those tonight and see where we are on this topic. Students will also work on the above homework this evening.

Tomorrow I will go over homework looking for students to ask questions if they had trouble. I can also collect homework to check completion rates.

As we come together for PTC, I’ll be asking students what they like, what they wish would change, what we could do more of. I will also be asking students for a look at their math notebook. How complete are the we do examples in class? These are key to understanding the homework.
